Protect PDF

What is this tool?

A PDF password protector. It encrypts the file with AES-256, the strongest standard PDF encryption, using an open password you set. You can also restrict printing, copying text, editing, commenting, filling forms and page changes. The encryption happens on your device; the file and the password are never sent anywhere.

When to use it

  • Sending a contract, payslip or ID scan by email
  • Sharing a document that only certain people should open
  • Making a read-only copy that can't be printed or copied from
  • Protecting a backup of personal paperwork
  • Locking a report before uploading it to shared storage

How to use it

  1. 1Drop in a PDF
  2. 2Type an open password and repeat it
  3. 3Choose what readers may do: printing, copying, editing, comments, forms, page changes
  4. 4Click Protect PDF
  5. 5Download the protected file and test it with the password

Frequently asked questions

How strong is the encryption?

AES-256, the strongest encryption the PDF standard defines. The open password is what protects the contents, so choose a long one.

What if I forget the password?

It can't be recovered — not by us (the file never leaves your device) and not by anyone else. Keep it somewhere safe.

Do the print and copy restrictions really stop people?

PDF apps such as Acrobat, Preview and browsers honour them, but software that chooses to ignore them can. Only the open password keeps the contents secret.

Can I restrict a PDF without a password to open it?

Yes — leave the open password empty and restrict what you like. It then opens normally, with the restrictions applied.

Can I protect a PDF that is already locked?

No — unlock it first, then protect it again with a new password.

Is my PDF uploaded?

No — it's encrypted entirely in your browser.
